Brief History

Seven years in the Navy left an indelible mark.  It was during this time that it became more and more obvious that God had a hand on my life and that of my family.  On February 13th of 1978 I gave his life to Christ.  Shortly thereafter I left the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander and went into private practice in Traverse City.  The practice opened on Union Street in July of 1979 and has remained a ministry for Christ and His purposes through the years.

At its inception, the practice was essentially traditional.  It encompassed OB, Pediatrics, out patient surgery, in-patient care, and minor surgery. Over the course of the subsequent years of practice, it became apparent that a great number of patients did not fully benefit from standard treatment modalities and disease were most often only symptomatically improved.  As treatments that did alter the course of the underlying disorder were recognized, they were incorporated into the practice.  (See Overview/Philosophy).  In 1994, I became extremely concerned that patients were faced with very grave end of life decisions because their various disorders were not effectively treated earlier.  It was evident that patients needed to be taught how to live so that they might avoid the horrible suffering that occurs when a metabolic system goes on the rampage.  Hence Shepherd of Hope Clinic was born to provide that teaching and to offer effective treatments with a goal of returning individuals to a vibrant health.

I continue to manage the Shepherd of Hope Clinic and see patients on a regular and scheduled basis.  Because of the size of the outpatient practice, I had to give up doing obstetrics and in patient care in 1996.  I loved OB and delivered about 1000 babies in my Naval and Family Practice career.  It was difficult to give up this wonderful aspect of practice.  It is a great thrill for me to see my  patients and their families that I have known now for 23 years grow in size and in health.  My own family is of the greatest importance to me and i enjoy being both a husband and father.  My wife Jan and I have been married  for 30 years.  We have 10 children, one grand child and another on the way.
